CALYX for PUBLIC
Public design is evident in every product, system or environment created for public use! “Public design” in relation to furniture and signs such as park benches, lamps, ... trash cans or street signs ... means that these objects are designed to be easy to use, easy to clean, easy to fix, very reliable and are uncomplicated and overall aesthetically pleasing.
In order to define public design, one necessarily has to think about more than just what constitutes “private design”. Changes in our global social and economic structure (transformation) have significant impacts on the way we think about property, privacy and the function of public space today.
Public design therefore encompasses much more than the park benches, street lamps and advertising posters that occupy our common spaces, and can be defined in the broadest sense as any design that supports and facilitates a functioning public today - including work, of course.
